The certificate has a radio frequency identification transponder (20) provided on a paper-like carrier unit. The transponder has a memory to store identification data of the certificate, and an antenna to receive readout signals and to transmit response signals modulated by a modulator. The modulator generates the modulated response signals based on the stored data using modulated physical characteristics of the readout signals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for verifying authenticity of a certificate (2) a verification device for a certificate, comprising an antenna.
