The method is for the referencing of an incremental travel sensor (23) in an electronically controlled operating device (10,24) of a clutch (22) in the drive train of a moving vehicle in which the operating device has a memory in which a characteristic is stored which determines the clutch torque depending upon the position of an operating element (20). The method entails determining whether the clutch slips beyond a threshold and if the result is in the affirmative determining the actual clutch torque, and determining the actual position of the operating element from the actual clutch torque and the stored characteristic. An independent claim is included for a device for the referencing of an incremental travel sensor in an electronically controlled operating device of a clutch in the drive train of vehicle.
