The drive train (1) for a motor vehicle has a drive unit with a parallel transmission with at least two sub-transmissions (16a,16b) each with an input shaft (46,50) coupled to the drive shaft (10) by a clutch unit (12,14). The clutch units in an undisturbed operating mode are operated by a control programme in dependence upon a nominal torque to be transmitted by the drive unit. With an actual torque relating to at least one clutch unit and reduced in relation to the nominal torque value, an operating mode adjusted to the transmission characteristic of the clutch unit is activated.
