PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely and efficiently producing highly pure 3-1-menthoxypropane-1,2-diol, and to provide an intermediate used in the method.;SOLUTION: 1-Menthol is added to a 1,2-epoxy-3-halogenopropane represented by general formula (I) (wherein, X is a halogen atom) in an organic solvent in the presence of a Lewis acid to provide a new 1-halogeno-3-1- menthoxypropan-2-ol represented by general formula (II) as shown in the reaction formula. The 1-halogeno-3-1-menthoxypropan-2-ol is epoxidized by a base in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst to provide 1,2-epoxy-3-1- menthoxypropane represented by chemical formula (III), and the 1,2-epoxy-3-1- menthoxypropane is hydrolyzed to provide the objective 3-1-3-1- menthoxypropane-1,2-diol represented by chemical formula (IV).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO
