In vitro method of screening for compounds (A) that inhibit formation of a complex between the p110 subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF3 and region II of the IRES (internal ribosome entry site) of hepatitis C virus (HCV). In vitro method of screening for compounds (A) that inhibit formation of a complex between the p110 subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF3 and region II of the IRES (internal ribosome entry site) of hepatitis C virus (HCV) comprises: (a) incubating p110 (814 amino acid sequence, given in the specification), region II (80 base pair sequence, given in the specification), or a fragment containing at least 10 consecutive nucleotides, and test compound; (b) detecting any formation of a p110/region II complex; and (c) selecting those compounds that inhibit formation of this complex.
