Voicemail converted to text message includes identifier linking to voicemail for playback

A caller initiates a voice call to a mobile telephone, which is diverted to a voicemail server where the caller leaves a voice message. The voice message is converted into an audio file format, which is the sent or streamed over a wide area network to a voice to text transcription system comprising a network of computers. One of the networked computers plays back the audio file to a human operator and the operator intelligently transcribes the original voice message by entering a corresponding text message into the computer. The transcribed text message, e.g. SMS or MMS, is then sent to the intended recipient mobile telephone from the computer. The text message includes a unique identifier that links it to the voice message held at the server to allow the user to play back the voice message to the mobile telephone.
