A safety catheter has a stand (10), a spring (20), a barrel (30) and a hub (40). The stand (10) and the spring (20) are mounted slidably within the barrel (30). The stand (10) has a proximal end, a distal end, an outer surface, a needle (18) protruding from the proximal end and multiple annular notches (19) formed in and extending radially inward from the outer surface. The barrel (30) has multiple clipper springs (38) mounted on one end of the barrel (30). The clipper springs (38) can clip the annular notches (19) to hold the needle (18) introduced into the hub (40). After insertion of the catheter is complete, the hub (40) can be simply withdrawn from the catheter to let the needle (18) retract in the barrel (30) automatically to prevent accidental pricking of staff.
