PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a poly (2-aryl-1,4-phenylene ether) which is useful as an electric/electronic material such as a printed board, an insulating sealing agent, etc., especially as a solder resist material, in a good efficiency.;SOLUTION: This method for producing the poly(2-aryl-1,4-phenylene ether) is provided by performing an oxidative polymerization of the 2-arylphenol in a medium containing a water-soluble solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing an aromatic heterocyclic compound and a transition metal compound. As the water-soluble solvent, an alcohol or a ketone is preferable, and as the aromatic heterocyclic compound, a nitrogen-containing 6-membered ring compound is preferable.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
