PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyalkylene oxide bearing an ether linkage and an ester linkage at its end by polymerizing an alkylene oxide compound in the presence of a nonmetallic catalyst and an ester compound.;SOLUTION: An alkylene oxide compound is polymerized at 200°C or below in the presence of 1×10-15-5×10-1 mole, based on 1 mole of the alkylene oxide compound, of a nonmetallic catalyst such as a phosphazenium compound, a phosphine oxide compound, a phosphine sulfide compound, represented by formula I, II and III, respectively, and the like, and 1-1×105 mole, based on 1 mole of the non-metallic catalyst, of an ester compound to give a polyalkylene oxide bearing an ether linkage at an initiation terminal and an ester linkage at a propagating terminal. The ester compound is composed of a 1-20C aliphatic or alicyclic alcohol or the like and an aliphatic or alicyclic carboxylic acid or the like.
