PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a functional element having excellent initial color-developing property and color stability with time. PSOLUTION: The organic-inorganic composite material is composed of a functional organic material bonded to a metal oxide through silanol bond. The silanol bond is especially preferably formed by reacting with a silane coupling agent. A functional electrode such as a display electrode for electrochromic display element can be produced by uniformly laminating the organic-inorganic composite material on an electrode to form a color-developing layer. A functional element such as an electrochromic display element is produced by using the functional electrode, a counter electrode and an electrolyte layer placed between the electrodes.
