PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a suitable degree of emphasis cannot be set automatically, since confirmation by visual observation of a worker is necessary. SOLUTION: A computer main body 21 as a center of image processing detects the number of input image data in a step S102, determines automatically an edge emphasis coefficient C and the size of unsharp mask 40 which is used in edge emphasizing process in a step S104, and executes the optimum edge emphasizing process in a step S108. In order to reduce the operation amount in the edge emphasizing process, picture elements having a large difference of image data between adjacent picture elements are only targeted in a step 106. In the practical operation, component values of RGB are not individually calculated but difference values to the component values of RGB from a luminance value are obtained and calculated, so that the total operation processing amount can be very reduced.
