Method and system to acquire data of elevation for an area. The present invention is directed to a method for acquiring data of elevation for an area. The method includes using a GPS receiver to map terrain elevations while leading in and out of an area and periodically recording the position, elevation, and time.Next, at least one track is held transversely to the tracks parallel to the transverse track intersecte paths in parallel. The data obtained is processed and the data of elevation of the transverse track are used to adjust the data of elevation to the parallel tracks, thereby compensating for the drift of elevation measurements recorded by the GPS receiver.The adjusted data for the entire area are processed by using the method of the present invention to obtain an elevation map for the area.
