The invention relates to a method for horizontally orienting an especially geodesic measuring instrument (1) with which a tripod (5) is associated. The adjustment instructions (7a, 7b, 7c) are optically reproduced by an optical display device (2) on the upper part (12), on adjustment elements (6a', 6b', 6c') which are symbolised in the display data (2') of the display device (2), the position of said elements corresponding essentially to the position of the adjustment elements (6a, 6b, 6c) in relation to the display device (2). The invention thus relates to a method for horizontally orienting an especially geodesical measuring instrument (1), and to one such measuring instrument (1) which facilitates the horizontal orientation thereof for a user, especially an inexperienced user.
