The method for loading of a container for piece goods entails moving the piece goods from a conveyor onto a support unit (10-14), which is opened, then, with the goods lying on the support unit, transferring the goods into the container at a defined destination where the goods are automatically set down. The support unit, at least for the most part, is moved away from the transporting device (9) under the piece goods. A multi-axis robot is used as the handling equipment, and the transporting device is constructed as the hand of the robot. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for loading of a container with piece goods by means of automatic handling equipment; and (2) a loading unit at airports for luggage with a conveyor and automatic handling equipment.
