The method involves imaging a peripheral surface (24) of a container (2) at an angular range of 360 degrees using an image recording station (32), during the transport of the container. The images of the surface of the container are optically analyzed to determine the position of joints (18, 20), which are formed while molding the container, using an image analyzing unit (34). The container is controllably rotated to bring labels in a preset angular relationship with respect to the joints, after determining the position of the joints. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting rotational direction of a container such as a bottle.
