The method involves arranging an elastically-reversible deformable portion (5) with the attached material layer (1) opposite a relief mold (2) so that the surface relief of the material layer correspondingly matches the relief mold. The material layer is placed onto the relief mold by canceling the holding force. The deformable portion with a surface (4) in the non-deformed initial state is arranged such that the surface (4) faces the material layer. The material layer is placed on a flat surface e.g. table so that deformable portion will be pressed against the material layer. The surface relief elastically deforms so that the surface (4) rests flat against a material layer with a holding force for temporarily fixing the material layer. The surface (4) returns to non-deformed state when the holding force reduces upon lifting the deformable portion from the flat surface. An independent claim is included for the device for placing at least one material layer onto a relief mold.
