The method involves specifying an operating window of a motor vehicle. A wind direction and a wind velocity are recorded to determine wind conditions on the vehicle. The desire speed is adapted within the operating window and in which the strength or head wind affecting the vehicle is considered. A more favorable consumption operating condition of the vehicle is recognized within the operating window as compared to the actual operating condition. The desire speed is changed to reach the more favorable consumption operating condition and arranged between an upper and lower maximum speed.
