The method involves reading identification data of an identification unit (5) of a foil roll (9), and checking whether the data can be assigned to a predetermined release quantity, where the unit comprises an optical readable data memory, electromagnetic readable data memory and a mechanical readable data memory. The machine is operated in an operating mode, when the identification data can be assigned to the release quantity. The machine is moved into another operating mode, in which the machine cannot be operated, when the data cannot be assigned to the release quantity.
