A combustion air filter element for a vehicle engine comprises at least in part pleated filter media (2, 3), a surrounding sealing gasket (7), and a stabilizing bridge web which extends between opposite ends of the media packs and clean and dirty sides, carrying a clamping screw socket (6) by which the unit is mounted in a filter housing. An independent claim is included for use of the filter element as part of an engine intake filter in a motor vehicle. Mounting bosses may be fitted to the bridge web on both clean and dirty sides of the filter elemnt.
