The lap-and-diagonal belt (2) is anchored (5) to the floor or to the lower part of a central console, and pretensioned by two mechanisms (PT1, PT2) subject to a control unit (GTO) incorporating two circuits (13, 17). One mechanism (PT1) is connected to the buckle (6) into which a tongue (4) on the belt is inserted, and which is moved by a pull on wire (9) to tighten the belt. The other mechanism (PT2) reacts to a different command to retract the belt at its other end (14).
