PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the amount of formation of hydrogen sulfide in a preliminary sulfurization process by a method wherein, when metallic oxides in desulfurization catalyst are sulfurized using hydrogen sulfide produced from sulfur compounds contained in supplied raw materials, a compound having mercaptoalkylthio groups is added in a specific range to effect preliminary sulfurization. ;SOLUTION: When desulfurization catalysts, which are used in a hydrodesulfurization process for petroleum polymer hydrocarbon compounds wherein metallic oxides in the desulfurization catalysts are sulfuraized using hydrogen sulfide produced from sulfur compounds contained in supplied raw materials, a compound having mercaptoalkylthio groups of 10 ppm to 0.5 wt.% with respect to the total amount of the supplied raw materials added to effect preliminary sulfurization. In this case, the compound has a mercaptoalkylthio group represented by the formula: HS-Cm H2m-S-((m) is an integer 2-4). Thus, hydrogenation reaction of sulfur compounds is accelerated so that a large amount of hydrogen sulfide is produced, which hydrogen sulfide is contacted with metallic oxides of the catalysts to produce sulfides.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
