The method involves formulating a diffusion equation which comprises an initial wave number and an inhomogeneity term considering spatial variations of optical properties of an inhomogeneous diffusing object`s medium, where the inhomogeneity term is incorporated in a real wave number. The square of the real wave number is defined by the sum of the inhomogeneity term and the square of the initial wave number of the diffusion equation.
