A vehicle safely system is disclosed. The system comprises a processor that during normal driving of the vehicle evaluates information about the possibility of a dangerous event occurring. Based on preset criteria the processor generates a command signal to mitigate the danger of the event. The system also has a crash detection system that can determine the vehicle has been involved in an accident and a positioning system to determine the location of the vehicle. The system also has a communication means that after the vehicle has been in a crash sends an emergency message including the position of the vehicle. The communication system may be a telephone or short range system able to send and receive signals between local objects and other vehicles. The system may have a map memory or database. The preset criteria may include the vehicle's speed, accelerati on, direction of travel, the local speed limit, the approaching speed limit, the curvature of the road, the weather conditions and any approaching traffic signals or junctions. The criteria may include the location of other objects detected to be likely to collide with the vehicle, such as other vehicles. The command signal may be to automatically brake, a warning signal and/or to modify the crash algorithm of the vehicle.
