PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous body for introducing a sulfur containing atomic group having a high surface S/C ratio and a high surface O/C ratio, a method of introducing the sulfur containing atomic group into the whole surface of the porous body with high efficiency, and a separator for an alkaline battery. SOLUTION: This porous body has a surface S/C ratio of not less than 710-4 and a surface O/C ratio of not less than 0.2. As for an introduction method, dielectric layers 41, 42 are disposed on opposite surface sides and a porous body 11 is disposed between a pair of electrodes 21, 22 which are oppositely disposed, and an electric discharge is generated by the application of a voltage under the existence of a sulfur containing compound gas and under the atmospheric pressure. A separator for an alkaline battery is constructed of a nonwoven fabric into which the atomic group containing sulfur is introduced.
