PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compress data without reducing spatial resolution in an image reading method for reading out an image by scanning the image in a sub- scanning direction by a line sensor. PSOLUTION: Orignal data are converted into data reducing the number of bits in the level direction of each pixel of the line sensor (10) in accordance with the input characteristics of the line sensor (10) and the converted data are packed in each transfer unit and transferred. Since information is compressed in the pixel level direction of each pixel by utilizing the characteristics of the sensor, spatial resolution information can be stored and the data are compressed while maintaining high resolution.
