A pharmaceutical composition for pain relief comprising: an effective amount of a narcotic analgesic in micellar form, an alkali metal alkyl sulfate, a polyoxyethylene ether or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, and a solvent; said alkali metal alkyl sulfate and polyoxyethylene ether or its salt each present in a concentration of between about 0.1 and 30 wt. /wt. % of the total composition; and the total concentration of the alkali metal alkyl sulfate and polyoxyetbylene ether or its salt together is less than about 50 wt. /wt. % of the total composition.
