METHOD OF TEACHING MATH PROBLEM-SOLVINGABSTRACT A method of solving a math problem of the type comprising one or more problem statements including problem elements and problem values. The method includes identifying problem elements and problem values included within the problem statements. There is provided a plurality of predetermined elementary concepts relating to possible relationships between problem elements and/or problem values, from which those elementary concepts defining relevant relationships between the identified problem elements and problem values are selected. A visual representation of the relationships is constructed using one or more predetermined visual aids that are associated with the plurality of predetermined elementary concepts. Applying one or more predetermined fundamental math skills to the identified relationships depicted in the visual representation enables a solution of the math problem to be found. A corresponding method of teaching students to solve math word problems is provided. In contrast to conventional topic-based teaching and learning approaches, a structured approach to the teaching of math problem solving, which is complementary to topic-based teaching, is provided.Fig 1
