Distinguishing between rat neurons and rat astrocytes comprises assaying a body fluid or tissue sample containing brain cells and identifying neurons if the presence of specific neuron-expressed proteins (107 are listed) is detected and identifying astrocytes if the presence of astrocyte-expressed proteins (109 are listed) is detected. Independent claims are also included for: (1) kit for identifying rat astrocytes in a sample containing brain cells, comprising an antibody that specifically recognizes astrocyte-expressed proteins as above and means for detecting the antibody-protein complex; (2) kit for identifying rat neurons in a sample containing brain cells, comprising an antibody that specifically recognizes neuron-expressed proteins as above and means for detecting the antibody-protein complex.
