A surgical stapling apparatus (10) comprising: a casing (14); a handle (12) supported by the casing; and a loading unit (16) supportable on a distal end of the housing, the loading unit including: one housing portion (200) including a distal end and a proximal end; a drive assembly (212) slidably supported within the housing portion of the loading unit; and characterized in that: the loading unit comprises a locking member (300) rotatably supported about the housing portion of the loading unit, including the locking member a projection (310) extending through the housing portion, being the member movable lock from a first position in which the locking member engages the drive assembly and maintains the drive assembly in a ready position for loading, to a second position in which the locking member permits movement of drive assembly relative to the housing portion.
