Procedure for controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine cylinder, said cylinder (1) being provided with a combustion chamber (11) that can be opened or closed at the intake and opened or closed at the exhaust, and at least a fuel injector (33), a procedure in which, during the same operating cycle of the cylinder, the following phases are carried out: - an opening phase for the escape between an exhaust opening instant (OE), and an escape closure instant (FE); - a first opening phase for admission between a first opening of admission (OA1) after the opening of exhaust (OE), and a first moment of closing of admission (FA1); - a second opening phase for admission between a second admission opening instant (OA2), and a second admission closing instant (FA2); - a fuel injection phase between an injection start time (OI), and an injection end time (FI); and - a combustion phase of the air-fuel mixture contained in the chamber (11), characterized in that the exhaust closing instant (FE) is included between the first intake opening instant (OA1) and the second opening instant of admission (OA2).
