A method for determining the risk of pouchitis development following a surgical procedure whereby an internal pouch is created in a patient with ulcerative colitis, comprising determining the presence or absence in material from said patient of microsatellite 171 allele FA1 or another pouchitis-associated allele within the receptor gene 1 interferon gamma (INFGR1), where the presence of said pouchitis-associated allele indicates an increased risk of pouchitis development.
