Use of at least one antigen, at least one adjuvant, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for the manufacture of a formulation for transcutaneous immunization by inducing an antigen-specific immune response in a subject; wherein said formulation is applied in a therapeutically effective amount to a pretreated area of the subject's skin which is not perforated, and the pretreatment breaks at least the corneal stratum of the skin, and where the antigen is at least partially purified and selected from the group consisting of carbohydrate, glycolipid, glycoprotein, lipid, lipoprotein, phospholipid and polypeptide.
