A solar cell element of high performance and a process for producing a substrate as a constituent of the solar cell element, in particular, a method of forming a mold for production of a silicon ingot suitable for obtaining the substrate. The method of forming a mold for silicon ingot production comprises the slurry preparation step of preparing a slurry containing a multiplicity of silicon nitride grains provided at the surface thereof with an oxide film in the state of having at least some of the multiplicity of silicon nitride grains aggregated by linkage between oxide films; the aggregation canceling step of canceling the state of aggregation of the silicon nitride grains by applying an external force to the silicon nitride grains in aggregation; and the mold release layer forming step of adhering the slurry having undergone the aggregation canceling step to an internal surface of mold base body to thereby form a mold release layer.
