A method of substratum heating in which a vanadium dioxide thermochromic thin film and functional products thereof can be efficiently produced; and a process for producing a multifunctional automatic heat control glass for use in windows of buildings and mobile objects. There is provided a process for producing a vanadium dioxide thin film and/or a functional product containing a vanadium dioxide thin film, characterized in that use is made of a heat resistant substratum with transparent conductive thin film having a transparent conductive thin film disposed on a heat resistant substratum, and that in the formation of a vanadium dioxide thin film, heating of the substratum is carried out by ohmic heating of the transparent conductive thin film. Accordingly, not only can efficient heating of the substratum by ohmic heating be carried out by the utilization of the transparent conductive thin film introduced in the substratum structure but also a method of controlling the optical characteristics of a heat control glass can be provided by the utilization of substratum structure capable of current passage.
