The invention provides an effluent treatment process, said process including contacting a lipoid containing effluent with one or more electrode pairs, passing a cyclic current to one or more of the electrode pairs thereby to cyclically energize said electrode pairs, and controlling the current flow to the one or more electrode in response to the electrode and/or effluent characteristics and/or changes therein so that an integrated energy sum of both the positive and negative current waveform per cycle is zero to within 20%. The process wherein the polarity of the current to the electrode pairs is periodically reversed and wherein the process stream is an electrolyte.
