Disclosed is a novel prophylactic or therapeutic agent for an ophthalmic disease associated with oxidative stress. A compound represented by the general formula (I) or a salt thereof has an excellent activity of inducing the phase-II enzyme in the xenobiotic metabolism system in a posterior ocular tissue such as a neuroretina, a retinal pigment epithelium and a retina/choroid, and is therefore useful as a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for an ophthalmic disease associated with oxidative stress, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, retinitis pigmentosa, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, retinal embolism, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis, Lever's disease, retinopathy of prematurity, retinal detachment, retinal pigment epithelial detachment, an optic neuropathy induced by any one of these diseases, an optic neuropathy induced by glaucoma, an ischemic optic neuropathy, and cataract.
