The invention relates to a device for assisting a motor vehicle seat to be lifted into a jack-knife position. The inventive device is characterised in that it comprises a single lifting spring (19), which is connected to a bar in such a way that they form one integral piece (20) fixed to a backrest frame and which is provided with an U-shaped part which is projected from the bar (20) on the vehicle floor side and is prestressingly supported by said floor in the backrest horizontal position in such a way that a pivoting force is produced on the backrest (1) in the substantially vertical lifted position thereof. Said invention is suitable for the automobile industry.
