A method and an apparatus for recognizing a parking lot, and a parking assistance system using the apparatus are provided to allow a driver to set a desired parking position accurately, by using an image of a camera to recognize a parking lot within a vehicle. An input image is received from a camera, and then converted into an edge image of an air view. A Hough space image is formed by performing Hough transformation on the edge image of the air view(S220). Parking lot-marking lines are recognized on the edge image of the air view by detecting a plurality of peak pairs on the Hough space image(S230). A plurality of parking lot-marking line segments is recognized from the parking lot-marking lines(S240). A guide line is recognized from the parking lot-marking line segments(S250). A plurality of divisional marking line segments is recognized from the guide line(S260). A parking lot is recognized by the guide line and divisional marking line segments(S270).
