The method involves determining phases of constant operating conditions of an internal combustion engine in a given area. A predicted signal change is determined from an emission characteristic diagram in an engine model and is predicted for a time interval depending on the conditions of the engine. A measured signal change of a particle sensor, an emission size with the former phase change of the sensor, the emission size predicted for a measuring interval and predicted limit values of the emission size are compared in the measuring interval during the phases of the conditions.
