The method involves comparing a signal stored in a memory (13) with a signal of a sensor e.g. cam shaft position sensor (4), delivered in a starting phase of an internal-combustion engine (1) of a motor vehicle for detecting an edge change in the starting phase of the sensor, where the comparison takes place with the help of a switching level. The presence or absence of the edge change is detected based on the result of comparison. The switching level is stored in the memory.
