The method involves carrying out internal cleaning and external cleaning of a milking machine (2) by a collecting container by controlling supply of water or by a cleaning agent, where the method is controlled by a computer program. A part of water or disinfecting liquid is used for the internal cleaning and the external cleaning of the milking machine, where the cleaning or disinfecting liquid is absorbed, reused or discharged. The internal cleaning and/or disinfection of the milking machine is implemented by rinsing. An independent claim is also included for a device for cleaning and disinfecting a milking machine.
