The method involves collecting soot particles on a sensor (7) transported in the flue gas steam, detecting the method of oxidation process of the soot particles accumulated on the sensor and determining the temperature at which the oxidation of the soot particles begin and determining the duration of the soot oxidation process. The soot particles accumulated on the sensor are so warmed up that the oxidation of the soot particles is released actively. The beginning of this method is determined by seizing the oxidation process. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a sensor for detecting the temperature required for releasing oxidation of soot particles collected form the flue gas stream of an internal combustion engine (2) a device for detecting the temperature required for releasing the oxidation of soot particles.
