The method involves interlocking two inter digital electrodes (22, 23) on a surface of a particle sensor (20). A sensor voltage is applied at the electrodes for determining load with soot particles (26) of the sensor. Sensor current over the electrodes are measured and evaluated. A heating element (24) is provided for heating the sensor in a regenerated phase. The soot particles and sooth path between the electrodes is directly heated with the heating element during application of the sensor voltage, and change in the conductivity of the soot particles or the sooth path is determined. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a particle sensor.
