The method involves determining the drive torque from a determined longitudinal acceleration of the motor vehicle and the determined change of the height level at an axle of the motor vehicle. The longitudinal acceleration and height level are measured by a sensor unit and height sensor respectively. A variable for mass of the vehicle is determined from the determined height change at the axle and the spring stiffness of the associated axle spring. An independent claim is also included for a control unit to execute the method.
