The method involves determining (1) the maximum drive torque per axle or wheel, which is transmitted to the axle or the wheel without affecting the stability. The actual drive torque is determined (2) under consideration of the driver desired torque (M-driver) specified by the driver and the ratios of the maximum drive torque per axle or wheel. The actual drive torque is limited (3) on the axle or the wheel, and the non-adjustable torque percentage is distributed on another axle or the wheel. An independent claim is included for a regulating- or controlling device for use in a driver assistance system of a vehicle for executing the method.
