The actuating element has an electric motor (10) and an actuating mechanism for a clutch. The electric motor moves the actuating mechanism from a compressed position to another position. A brake device (46) is provided for retaining the actuating mechanism in the latter position. Retaining force applied by the brake device or by the electric motor is changeable. The electric motor and the brake device are operated simultaneously.
