The method involves determining a value of an intake pressure and/or intake rate in an air intake manifold (5). The opening of a solenoid valve (31) is controlled, and the pressure value and/or intake rate is input to an electronic control unit (25) when the valve is opened or closed. An air pressure or rate admitted by the engine is allowed across the manifold to generate an operation variation of the engine. An operation parameter of the engine is detected, and a fault in opening the valve and malfunctioning of the engine is deduced if the parameter does not show the variation.
