The method involves verifying whether variation of an exhaust gas component detected by an exhaust gas sensor (16) produces a predictable variation of a signal (s-Mes) from the sensor. A diagnosis is carried out only if a preset variation of an operating parameter (Md, n, agr) of an internal combustion engine (10) and/or a characteristic value of the exhaust gas (ms-Abg) e.g. nitrous oxide, is detected during current operation of the internal combustion engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for diagnosing an exhaust gas sensor installed in an exhaust gas zone of an internal combustion engine for carrying out the diagnosing method (2) a program for control apparatus executing all the steps of the diagnosing method (3) a program product of a control apparatus comprising a program code recorded on a medium for implementing an exhaust gas sensor diagnosing method.
