The method involves computing gradient activities of a macro-block in prediction directions from two-dimensional convolution window shifted in the macro-block, where the macro-block is constituted of image blocks. Directional intra-encoding modes of the macro-block having directions that correspond to the gradient activities having a minimal value are pre-selected to determine an encoding mode of the macro-block. An independent claim is also included for a device for encoding an image sequence.
