A hospital location system (10) comprising a lighting system (16a) for illuminating the hospital (12), and a control device (14) cooperating with the illumination system (16a). The control device (14) is adapted to modulate in a predetermined manner the illumination produced by the lighting system (16a). The hospital locating system (10) also includes a detector (20a) for detecting illumination produced by the illumination system (16a). The hospital location system (10) is able to identify the location of the detector (20a) according to how the lighting is modulated. There is also a corresponding method for locating people and objects in or near a hospital (12).
